Creating New Work Items

Meaningful work items
The types described below are the default work item types for software projects. You have the flexibility to change everything about a work item type to suit your needs. However, even if you are not planning to use KanDo to manage software projects, the purpose of the types defined here are conducive to successful agile management.

When epics are not enough, initiatives can be used to provide more structure to very large projects. Container types do not participate in the workflow and can be viewed from the tree view, the documentation view, and the search view. They do not appear in the Kanban or the workflow view.

An Epic is a standard agile container item used for organizing long running projects into phases. Container types do not participate in the workflow and can be viewed from the tree view, the documentation view, and the search view. They do not appear in the Kanban or the workflow view.

The typical agile user story and acceptance criteria. Can have child tasks and bugs.

A generic work item, often used as a child work item to split the work out into smaller pieces. Can have child tasks and bugs.

For tracking issues, whether from the field or found internally. Special consideration to bugs is given in the statistics collected and aggregated by KanDo. Can have child tasks.

Time boxed investigation or prototyping, the outcome of which is usually information required to make a decision about the project or the parent work item. Can have child tasks and bugs.

Work required to improve the long-term support and evolution of a product. Usually not immediately profitable work, but its value can be realized at a future date. If that does not occur, then that work was likely wasted. Make sure you only work on technical debt that will provide measurable value to the business. Can have child spikes, tasks and bugs.

Process improvement is when you need to use significant resources to improve the process in a measurable way. By nature, agile project management continuously evaluates how its processes perform. It is the key to developing high performing teams.
